Chapter 3 . Laboratory Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Methods for Geologic Samples

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a technique used to determine qualitative and quantitative features of IR-active molecules in organic or inorganic solid, liquid or gas samples. It is a rapid and relatively inexpensive method for the analysis of solids that are crystalline, microcrystalline, amorphous, or films. Samples are analyzed on the scale of microns to the scale of kilometers and new advances make sample preparation, where needed, relatively straightforward. Another advantage of the IR technique is that it also can provide information about the " light elements " (e.g., H and C) in inorganic substances. Laboratory FTIR spectroscopy is used by geochemists to determine mineral structure (e.g., Farmer 1974, van der Marel & Beutelspacher 1976), to quantify volatile element concentrations, isotopic substitutions and structural changes in natural and synthetic minerals, glasses and melts Wolf 1995, King et al. 2004), to examine the origin of color and properties of minerals (e.g., Rossman 1988b, Clark 2004), to examine thermodynamic and transport properties of geologic materials (e.g., Hofmeister 2004), to examine geologic materials in

Fourier Transform Infrared and Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy of Polymers
This chapter covers the fundamental principles and current applications of Fourier transform (FT) infrared and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopies as utilized in the analysis of polymeric materials. The primary emphasis of the first part is on the principles and advantages of these interferometric methods, whereas the remaining sections illustrate numerous applications focusing on the struct...
متن کاملInteraction of Cisplatin with Cellular Macromolecules: A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Study
Platinum is a metallic element, which may react with our cellular component through its involvement in cancer chemotherapy medications. Cisplatin is one of the most useful antineoplastic drugs against human ovarian carcinoma, which has the central element of platinum in its structure. The nature of chemical interaction between platinum and cellular macromolecules is yet to be understood. We exa...

Background and Purpose: This research aimed to investigate the in vivo acute oral toxicity of aqueous extract of Indigofera tinctoria L. in different doses in Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five male rats were divided into five groups (n=5 for each group). Group I served as the control, and the other four groups received I. tinctoria (100, 250, 500, and 1000mg/kg body weight) for 1...
متن کاملAuthentication of Red Meat Quantities Reported on Labels of the Industrial Kebab Loghmeh Using Analysis of Fourier Transform Infrared Data and Chemometric Methods
Background and Objectives: Kebab loghmeh is one of the most popular meat products in Iran. Quantitative assessment of the red meats is critical as the most important factor in authentication of this meat product. Other methods of adulteration tracing do not include enough efficiency to quantitatively assess quantities of the red meats in final products. Therefore, the objective of the current s...
